Introduction to Cabo San Lucas Beaches
Planning family photos in Cabo San Lucas and not sure which beach is best?
This is one of the most common questions families ask before booking a photo session in Los Cabos — and the answer depends on the kind of photos you want.
Some beaches are best for soft golden sunset light. Others are better for dramatic cliffs, calm water, or easy access with kids.
As a local Cabo family photographer, I help visiting families choose the best beach based on lighting, crowd levels, safety, and the style of photos they want most.
Here’s a local guide to the best beaches for family photos in Cabo San Lucas.
1. Monuments Beach (Best Overall for Family Photos)
If you want the best all-around beach for family photos in Cabo San Lucas, Monumentos Beach is usually my top recommendation.
It offers:
wide open beach
soft golden light at sunset
beautiful rock formations
fewer crowds than Medano
plenty of space for kids to run and play
This is one of the most reliable beaches for family sessions because it gives a perfect mix of scenic views, natural movement, and clean backgrounds.
It’s especially great for:
young kids who need space
playful candid photos
walking shots by the water
sunset family portraits
Monumentos is one of the best choices for families who want relaxed, natural photos that feel warm and effortless.
At last but not less important is the closest beach to Cabo San Lucas downtown and you can get ther in 5 minutes Uber. Most of nice beaches fot photo session are a few minutes from downtown by car and have less people and better backgrounds.
2. Santa Maria Beach (Best for Calm Water and Clean Blue Tones)
Santa Maria is ideal for families who love calm water, clean sand, and bright turquoise tones.
This beach feels peaceful and polished, which makes it perfect for:
elegant family portraits
clean tropical backgrounds
calmer sessions with less visual clutter
families staying in the Corridor
Because the water is calmer and the bay is protected, it often creates a softer and more peaceful feel in photos.
This is a great option if you want Cabo to look bright, clean, and tropical in your images.
3. Chileno Beach (Best for Bright, Clean Vacation Look)
Chileno Beach is one of the cleanest and most swimmable beaches in Los Cabos, and it works beautifully for family photos with a fresh vacation feel.
It’s best for families who want:
bright blue water
clean sand
relaxed tropical vacation photos
simple, natural backgrounds
This location feels very “classic Cabo” and works especially well for families staying in resorts along the Tourist Corridor.
4. Medano Beach (Best for Families Staying in Downtown Cabo)
Medano Beach is convenient, accessible, and easy for families staying in downtown Cabo San Lucas.
The biggest advantage here is convenience.
If your family is staying near:
the marina
downtown Cabo
medano resort
this can be a very easy location for a quick and fun session.
That said, Medano is usually busier than other beaches, so timing matters more here.
It’s best for:
convinience
easy access with small kids
quick sessions close to the hotel
5. Playa Las Viudas (Best for Dramatic Scenic Photos)
If you want something more dramatic and unique, Playa Las Viudas offers one of the most visually striking landscapes in Cabo.
This beach is known for:
dramatic rock formations
more editorial-style scenery
unique Cabo landscape
textured shoreline
It’s a beautiful option for older kids, families with teens, or families who want something less traditional.
This beach is less ideal for very small children, but visually it’s one of the most unique locations in Cabo.
6. Cabo Real Beach (Best Hidden Gem Between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas)
Cabo Real Beach is one of the most underrated locations for family photos in Los Cabos — and one of my personal favorites.
Located next to Marquis Los Cabos, this beach sits right in the middle of San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, which makes it one of the most convenient options for families staying anywhere along the Tourist Corridor.
It’s especially ideal for families staying in San José del Cabo who want something closer than driving all the way to Cabo San Lucas.
What makes Cabo Real special is how much variety it offers in one location.
You get:
beautiful golden sunset light
a wide open beach with very few people
unique textured sand
grassy areas near the entrance for variety
dramatic stone formations with clean ocean views
rocky shoreline with natural pools and reflections
This beach gives you a little bit of everything, which makes it one of the best places in Los Cabos for a full family gallery with lots of variety.
In one session, you can get:
clean beach portraits
playful shots near the water
kids exploring tide pools and rocks
soft family photos in open sand
more scenic images with texture and depth.
Because it’s usually less crowded, Cabo Real feels more relaxed and private than many of the more popular beaches.
That makes it especially great for families who want:
more space
less stress
fewer people in the background
a quieter, more natural experience
It’s also one of the easiest beaches to recommend logistically.
Cabo Real is about 15 minutes from San José del Cabo and about 15 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, making it one of the most central beach photo locations in Los Cabos.
And if you don’t have a rental car, Uber works very well here, which makes getting to and from the beach simple and easy for visiting families.
For families staying anywhere between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo Real is one of the best hidden gems for family photos in Los Cabos — especially if you want beautiful sunset light, variety, and a quieter beach experience.
This one is my favorite as its the less crowded beach with a mix of sand and palmtrees with an excelent sunset backlight and its in between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo making it perfect fit for people staying in any of those cities.
Which Beach Is Best for Your Family Photos?
The best beach depends on your family, your kids’ ages, and the style of photos you want.
Here’s the simple version:
Monumentos Beach → best overall
Santa Maria Beach → calm and elegant
Medano Beach → easiest access
Playa Las Viudas → dramatic and unique
Chileno Beach → bright and tropical
Cabo Real Beach Beach → calm, easy and great rocky background
For most families visiting Cabo San Lucas, Monumentos is the best balance of beauty, light, space, and relaxed energy.
Best Time for Family Photos in Cabo
No matter which beach you choose, the best time for family photos in Cabo San Lucas is always the last hour before sunset.
This is when you get:
softer light
better skin tones
less squinting
cooler temperatures
the most flattering colors
Sunset is especially important in Cabo because midday light is much harsher and less forgiving for portraits.
That golden evening light is what gives Cabo family photos their warm, natural, timeless look.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right beach makes a huge difference in how your family photos feel.
The right location helps create:
better light
less stress for kids
more natural movement
more variety in your gallery
more relaxed and genuine photos
